This article is divided into two parts. The first part is a list of frequently asked questions ( FAQs ) for KVM series products, and the second part is a list of frequently asked questions ( FAQs ) for different models of KVM.
Part I (list of FAQs for KVM series products)
1. What is a KVM?
A KVM (keyboard, video, mouse) switch is a hardware device that allows a user to control multiple computers from a single keyboard, video monitor, and mouse. Previously KVM's were mostly seen in data centers but in recent years have expanded to the consumer market due to the number of video devices that many homeowners use (computers, streaming devices, game consoles, security systems, etc.)
2. Why do I need a KVM instead of an HDMI switch?
A KVM is different from an HDMI switch by adding the keyboard and mouse functionality. HDMI switches are very inexpensive because they are very limited in functionality. If a computer is one of the many inputs that need to be managed, a KVM will be the preferred device.
3. Who uses a KVM?
Anyone who needs to manage more HDMI inputs than what their TV or computer monitor allows will benefit from a KVM. Also, users of multiple PCs have a need for a KVM switch as it eliminates the need to have multiple peripherals and monitors.
4. Can I use a wireless mouse/keyboard?
Yes. If you have issues with functionality, please try the USB 2.0/3.0 port. Please note that using the USB 2.0/3.0 port will disallow keyboard hotkeys for switching. Only dedicated keyboard/mouse ports have hotkey functionality.
5. Can I use a Bluetooth keyboard/mouse?
No, the KVM does not have built-in Bluetooth. Therefore any Bluetooth device will bypass the KVM and connect directly to the computers. For example, the Apple Magic Mouse and Magic Keyboard will not connect to the KVM. If you can connect the device to a USB dongle and then connect this to the USB 2.0/3.0 port of the KVM it could work. If it is a 2.4G Hz USB wireless receiver, it can also be connected to the keyboard and mouse dedicated port to use.
6. When I have many USB devices that need to be connected to the KVM Switch, can I connect them to the dedicated mouse & keyboard ports?
No, you can't. Dedicated mouse & keyboard ports should not be used for other types of USB devices.
You can connect a powered USB hub to the USB 2.0/3.0 interface to expand the number of USB 2.0/3.0 ports and connect your USB devices to the USB Hub.
7. What if my keyboard does not have a scroll lock button?
Keyboards that do not have a scroll lock button like Apple dedicated keyboards will need to change the hotkey command to the [Right CTRL] button. You can make this change by holding down the select button for about 15 sec (or until the KVM beeps). Or using the command [Scroll Lock+Scroll Lock+F1] using another compatible keyboard. Right Ctrl is now the hotkey command.
Please note that the following models do not support changing the hotkey: HKS801-E23 (Previously HKS0801A1U), HKS801-L23 (Previously HKS0801A30), HKS1601-E23 (Previously HKS1601A1U), HKS1601-L23 (Previously HKS1601A10).
8. Can I use dual monitors?
Yes, here are our options for Dual Monitor KVMs. Each computer needs 2 video connections for the dual monitors to work. Whichever one needs the least amount of adapter is the best option.
9. Can I use a single monitor with dual monitor KVM?
Yes, it's not an issue.
10. Can I connect to vga / dvi / DisplayPort?
Yes.
11. Do the KVM switches support ultrawide monitors?
Yes. They support all 21:9 and 16:9 monitors.
12. Which keyboards/mice are supported? Is my keyboard compatible?
The second-generation chipset has a wider range of compatibility (A2U) most keyboards have passed our testing. If the keyboard is not compatible then the USB 2.0/3.0 port can be used. All keyboards and mice will work through the USB2.0 port but they will not have hotkey functionality.
13. How do I turn off the audio beep/buzz when switching?
Using the hotkey command: Scroll Lock, Scroll Lock, F11.
14. Why is the remote battery not included & what battery is needed?
Due to robust demand, we typically ship the products airfreight. This has caused issues with hazardous goods regulations. The remote requires a CR2025 battery, which can be found at most convenience and grocery stores. Some of the newer versions of the product have remote controls that use the more common AAA batteries.
15. How do I operate the remote?
Press the number that corresponds to the input that you would like to select. Press “P” to turn on/off the auto scan feature. The remote is designed to be used across several models so only certain buttons will function with your device.
16. I have a Mac keyboard that does not have a scroll lock key. Can I reassign the scroll lock hotkeys?
Most models have the ability to reassign Scroll Lock to Right-CTRL. Please refer to the manuals for the hotkey instructions. All manuals are listed here.
17. Can the switch handle multiple inputs with different resolutions and adapters
Absolutely. Each port is equipped with EDID. The switch will adjust the resolution for each port based on the capabilities of the input device and monitor. If Port 1 has a computer that can only provide 1920x1080, you can also have a computer in Port 2 at 3840x2160. The switch will send the appropriate resolution to the monitor. Likewise, if one computer requires an adapter such as VGA to HDMI, you can continue to use a normal HDMI cable on the other ports.
Please note that your monitor will need to accept 3840x2160 to achieve that resolution.
18. Do the KVM's work with Macintosh computers?
We have tested several Mac computers (2018 Macbook Pro, 2012 Mac Mini, 2008 MacPro) and have not had issues. That said, recent versions of MacOS (since High Sierra and Mojave) limit the refresh rate of external monitors to 30 Hz. The resolution limitation is not an issue with the KVM but a software limitation of Apple's operating system. There are several workarounds posted on the internet. M1 Macs have a single monitor limitation that will require a docking station with display link software to operate dual monitors. We have a video dedicated to this here.
19. How can I be notified of future product firmware improvements?
Please sign up to our newsletter. We respect your right to privacy. We promise not to spam your inbox!
20. How do I make a warranty claim?
TESmart offers a 1 year worldwide warranty, more details can be found in the related article about "Purchase".
If you have any questions or would like to submit a claim please send us a message using the form on the Warranty page.

Please check if the HDMI cable of the input/output is properly connected. The “online” light on the KVM switch indicates the USB connection status.
-
Can a USB hub be attached to the USB 2.0/3.0 port?

Tips for HDMI cable length:
- When using 4K@60Hz as an input, it is required that the Input HDMI cable < 3 meters and the output HDMI cable < 5 meters;
-. When using 4K@30Hz as an input, it is required that the Input HDMI cable <5 meters and the output HDMI cable < 10 meters;
-. When using 1080@60Hz as an input, it is required that the Input HDMI cable <10 meters and the output HDMI cable be < 15 meters.

Please check if the HDMI cable of the input/output is properly connected. The “online” light on the KVM switch indicates the USB connection status.
-
What kind of keyboard and mouse is it compatible with?
The dedicated keyboard and mouse port with emulation emulator has a "pass-through mode", which greatly improves the compatibility of the keyboard. Support multimedia keyboard (with volume increase and decrease, play, pause, etc.), custom keyboard and mouse, wireless keyboard and mouse with dongle. Keyboard software such as Logitech Options, DAS Q, Corsair iCUE, etc. conflicts with the emulation emulator and limits the ability to use dedicated macro keys. We recommend using the KVM’s USB 2.0/3.0 port as a workaround if this software is desired. Please use a USB hub to expand USB connectivity if needed. KVM’s USB2.0 port doesn‘t have emulation programming so that will not recognize hotkey switching commands.
-
